Takeaways

There are currently 21 green banks operating in the country, all of which are mission-first nonprofit investment funds dedicated to filling existing financing gaps to accelerate clean energy adoption. The Colorado Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) underscores its unique role as a non-depository institution staffed with energy and finance professionals, with a vision to facilitate a just and equitable transition to a decarbonized economy.

In 2024, CCEF’s key initiatives include scaling capacity, engaging with governments, and accessing the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. Their project pipeline will prioritize building decarbonization, distributed generation, and transportation sectors, with plans to explore additional markets such as energy-water nexus and resilience projects.

“It’s going to be paramount that all of these green banks, the credit unions and the CDFIs move in this direction in order to underwrite and deploy the capital as quickly as we’re going to be asked to do it.”Heather, CIO at Colorado Clean Energy Fund, as she discusses allocating the grant money quickly and efficiently using platforms such as the loan origination platform from biz2x.

CCEF operates remotely without branches, providing advantages like lower capital costs and longer terms. Their expertise in clean energy, collaboration with grant programs, and strong ties with utilities for rebate initiatives further distinguish them from traditional banks.

Heather, CIO of the Colorado Clean Energy Fund, emphasizes the importance of operational efficiencies to handle significant capital influxes. Investing in technology to enhance operational efficiency is crucial, considering that current systems may not efficiently accommodate such large amounts. Bringing systems in-house allows for greater control and management, ensuring adaptability to daily needs.
